Social Emotional Learning for a culture of mental wellness and enjoying a healthy life in a stigma free community.

 UNLimited

WORTH

KEYNOTE SPEAKING
For teens and young adults

Mental health and physical health in teens and people of all ages, are inextricably linked.

It is as important to talk about mental health as it is physical health. The second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34 is suicide. 1 in 6 youth, ages 6 to 17 are diagnosed each year with mental health disorder and 315,000 youths in Texas ages 12 to 17 experienced depression in 2021. Depressed teens are 2X's more likely to drop out of school and 64.7% of youth ages 12 to 17 with depression did not receive care.

One of the biggest factors that is driving isolation and reluctance to seek help or treatment is stigma.  The myths, the misinformation and fears we have when it comes to talking openly and honestly about mental health are among the most challenging, and easily overcome issues affecting our mental wellness today.

We have an opportunity to improve the lives of today's teens and tomorrow's future community leaders, while lowering the need and dependence on mental health care, crisis interventions, and illness support in Texas by addressing one of the most serious factors in healthcare today - mental health.

Mental health and physical health are inextricably linked.

It is as important to talk about mental health as it is physical health. People with depression have a 40% higher risk of developing heart diseases than the general population (NAMI). The second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34 is suicide. The top causes of illness and death among all ages have similar underlying causes such as poor sleep, lack of proper nutrition, exercise, or social interaction. Stress, causing poor mental health leading to depression decreases our immune response, increases risky behaviors and in many instances leads to substance abuse and addiction.

Texas ranks 41st in the USA for youth and mental health (33rd for adults). This indicates that youth have higher prevalence of mental illness and lower rates of access to care.*

  • 1 in 6 youth, ages 6 to 17 are diagnosed each year with mental health disorder

  • 315,000 youths ages 12 to 17 experienced depression – and depressed HS teens are 2X's more likely to drop out

  • 64.7% of youth ages 12 to 17 with depression did not receive care

  • 43% of all Texans report anxiety or depression

  • 7 in 10 youth in the juvenile justice system have a mental health conditions*

Besides the high cost of therapy, high uninsured rates, and lack of support in the healthcare system for mental health**, one of the biggest factors that is driving isolation and reluctance to seek help or treatment is stigma.

We have an opportunity to improve the lives of today's teens and tomorrow's future community leaders, while lowering the need and dependence on mental health care, crisis interventions, and illness support in Texas by addressing one of the most serious factors in healthcare today - mental health.
